I don't know about you, but I'm feeling 21...

One more year and I'll be able to sing Taylor Swift's song "22". I mean, I rock out to it now, but in a year it will be legit.

On March 25 I turned 21. I honestly don't care for birthdays. But wait. If we followed suit and had Hobbit birthdays, I’d be all for that. Don’t know how Hobbits celebrate growing old? They don’t receive gifts, they dish them out- like Christmas! You’d end up getting more gifts each year than you would if you just had a traditional birthday. Don't get me wrong- when people give gifts it's very kind and one should always be gracious- like when your awesome aunt gifts you some magazine subscriptions. Such a creative gift, I love it! I'm taking notes for next year's Hobbit-like birthday...

I thought I’d make a list of some things a 21 year old Mormon girl can do:

~ Get into concerts at the Peppermill in Wendover, Nevada. No drinking though.

~ Go on a mission (of course it’s just my luck that right around the time I’m about to turn 21, they lower the minimum age…). Oh well, I’m used to it.

~ Get married (but really, that’s been on each birthday list since I turned like, 18).

~ Apply to adopt a child. Yes! I’ve been waiting for this one. But darn, marriage comes first. Does it have to? Angelina Jolie did it backwards but seems happy enough, right?

~ Buy a gun. NO THANK YOU. I hate guns. The Indians did just fine without them. I’ll admit not all Indians should be emulated, but watch “The Last of the Mohicans” and try to be more like the last Mohican. Just a suggestion…

Well, here’s to another year. May it be filled with laughter, success, adventures, kindness and rain- lots of rain.

Thoughts on a book...

And in this case, movie too.

I recently finished reading Nim's Island. I think it's around 100 pages. Yes, it's a children's book. But you know what? I enjoy reading children's books. Unlike so many books I read, I appreciate that most children's books aren't pushing 1000 pages. Nor do they have 10 books in the series. Plus, I can finish them in a day or two. Don't get me wrong- big books are awesome, but sometimes I just need a breather! Children’s books are short, but long enough for me to get to know the characters and become involved in the adventure (in my head at least).

But back to the book- it was cute and had me wishing I lived on an island in the south pacific where no one would find me. Bliss! Oh, and let’s not forget the coconuts, mmm. And how about the illustrations? You don’t get those in a hunk of a book- unless it’s an encyclopedia- which by the way, I will randomly pick up and start reading when I feel like it. What can I say other than I love learning?

Anyway, I’d describe the illustrations as squiggle-like drawings. Now, I’m the first to admit that my drawing skills leave a whole lot to be desired. At least the illustrations (squiggles) in the book do look like what they were intended to be. My squiggles look like, well, squiggles.

Speaking of visual imagery, I rewarded myself (because it was such a tough book…) by watching the movie. I’d seen it before but if you didn’t know, I can watch the same movie more times than you. Don’t think so? Let’s have a movie-watching battle. Who can watch the same movie over and over again, back to back? My record is like, at least a whole hand. The movie, in case you were wondering, was Stardust.

Okay, okay. Focus. Nim’s Island- the movie. One name: Gerard Butler. His name says it all. And can I just let everyone know that I’m becoming a Jodie Foster fan? I know it’s late in the game, but better late than never right? She is so funny in this movie. She gave such a great performance. But honestly, how hard could it be to give a good performance when you’re filming in Australia? Oh, and please don’t forget that that blessed country gave us Russell Crowe. Thank you, Australia, thank you.
